We opened GDC with our talk about our Aether Engine technology and the problems it could solve in games development, launching our distributed simulation engine into the world with a bang. It was a huge privilege to have such an important spot on the GDC schedule and we couldn’t think of any better way to start the show. We’ll bring you the full video of the talk soon!
This led towards our big showstopper that we’ve created in partnership with CCP Games, the EVE: Aether Wars showcase. We wanted to bring players from around the globe into one big battle at GDC, as one example of what game developers could achieve with Aether Engine. We pride ourselves on our ambition and the drive to keep pushing ourselves… but an hour-long battle with thousands of players live at GDC? It was a crazy, crazy idea.
Not only did you respond in huge numbers around the world to join our EVE: Aether Wars space clash but you also descended upon mass at our GDC booth, watching the tally of ships continue to grow and grow to unprecedented numbers. GDC delegates flocked to our area in Moscone Center’s South Hall as word of mouth quickly spread - developers, consultants, producers, students, all of you came to see the showcase.
We also hosted a series of talks on our booth during GDC. It was fitting that none other than the CEO of CCP Games, Hilmar Petursson, had the first talk on our stand as he spoke about emergent gameplay, Aether Engine and future plans for EVE. On the second day of GDC, we had a quick one-two punch of Russ Clarke from Payload Studios and Andreas Pohl from Microsoft delivering talks, covering indie games development to back-end architecture in gaming.
We’ll have videos of all three talks available soon.
It wasn’t just talks on our stand either. Our Head of Product, Aidan Hobson-Sayers, was invited to talk at the Microsoft Theater. Aidan spoke about ‘A Vision for the Future of MMO Development’, touching on the challenges the genre faces along with solutions. Microsoft will be hosting video of the 20-minute talk on their website - we’ll let you know as soon as this becomes available.
But mostly, GDC was about you. You wanted to know everything about Hadean, about Aether Engine and about EVE: Aether Wars. We heard your thoughts, your questions, your feedback, your interest, as you brought your energy and enthusiasm to our booth. We’ve learned so much from the past three days, from the EVE: Aether Wars showcase and from the feedback we’ve had, and we can’t wait to take what we’ve learned and show you what’s next.
Hadean’s next stop is a little closer to home for us. We’ll be at EGX Rezzed in London on Friday 5th April. We’ll have more details on what’s happening soon but those with an interest in our Aether Engine tech should definitely keep that date free.
But for now, a huge thank you to everyone at GDC 2019, from those who came to see us to those who took part in EVE: Aether Wars to those who got in touch over the past few days. See you at Rezzed!
