Flocking behavior is a computational algorithm that simulates the flocking behaviour exhibited by birds. Flocking behaviour was first simulated in 1987 by Craig Reynolds with his simulation program, Boids. Since then flocking behaviour has been more widely adopted an is used across a variety of applications from gaming, to swarm intelligence.

Monte Carlo simulations are ​probabilistic and used to observe different outcomes in a process with the intervention of random variables. Typically used to calculate risk, Monte Carlo simulations are widely adopted in finance, but can also be found in engineering, supply chain, science, and gaming.

Ant Colony Optimization

Ant colony optimisation (ACO) is a technique inspired by this approach which has been used on real-world problems like vehicle routing and resource allocation. In this demonstration we use Hadean’s octree data structure to construct a distributed ant colony optimiser. Our approach can easily be used construct solvers for other problems where the solution space can be modelled as paths in two or three-dimensional Cartesian space.
